SkillSoft Survey Reveals Virtual Training More Effective Than Instructor-Led Training

NASHUA, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--SkillSoft, a leading SaaS provider of e-learning and performance support solutions for global enterprises, government, education and small to medium-sized businesses, today announced the results of an annual survey that continues to underscore the effectiveness of Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT) programs, such as SkillSoft’s Live Learning. Respondents rated the Live Learning virtual format as most valuable when compared to traditional in-person Instructor Led Training (ILT). The survey also validated the training effectiveness of VILT for certification exams, with Live Learning students achieving a 92 percent pass rate after taking a Live Learning class to prepare for the certification exams.

The recent survey was conducted with students who had attended one or more Live Learning, virtual classroom courses within the past year. More than 2,500 learners were invited to participate in the survey. Consistent with the 2009 results, seven out of ten respondents said VILT is either about the same, better, or much better than ILT – without taking costs into consideration. When costs were taken into consideration, 87 percent said that Live Learning offered similar or better value than ILT. Overall results between the 2009 and 2010 surveys showed a continued increase in the value of a virtual learning format.

“With this annual survey, it’s clear to see that virtual training continues to increase its value,” said John Ambrose, SkillSoft's senior vice president of strategy, corporate development and emerging business. “SkillSoft has been a pioneer in virtual instruction for nearly 10 years. We are pleased that students continue to find the materials and methods used in Live Learning more helpful when compared with traditional in-person classroom Instructor-Led Training.”

Live Learning courses are available on SkillSoft’s award-winning learning management system, SkillPort. Delivered at roughly half the cost of traditional classroom learning, Live Learning provides users with an array of online classes taught by world-class instructors on high-demand information technologies and business practices. Live Learning combines all the benefits of instructor-led training with the added features of online learning. Students are able to access trainings in a more flexible, convenient format while maintaining the learning engagement of an expert-led class.

Delivered via the Internet, students can stream SkillSoft Live Learning from their desktop to study or prep for a broad range of subjects, including high-demand certification programs such as those sponsored by the Project Management Institute, Cisco, Microsoft and CompTIA. Classes are taught by two instructors; offering a lively contrast in styles, perspectives and technical insight. SkillSoft taps top talent from around the world to bring seasoned professionals directly to the students.

Live Learning sessions are available through a calendar of scheduled events or recorded sessions for on-demand access. Scheduled in a staggered college-style format, the Live Learning courses are conducted in two, 3-hour online sessions per week. The recorded sessions are available to students at any time, allowing learners to conveniently reference material for a refresher or to catch a missed class. SkillSoft Live Learning classes not only deliver the ultimate classroom experience but also provide access to materials and classes for up to one year, where face-to-face training takes place only once.

SkillSoft Announces Availability of Hundreds of One Hour Business Skills Courses in 14 Languages

Most Popular One Hour Courses Localized to Help Organizations Meet their Global Training Needs

NASHUA, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--SkillSoft, a leading SaaS provider of e-learning and performance support solutions for global enterprises, government, education and small to medium-sized businesses, announced the availability of over 730 newly localized one-hour business skills courses offered in 14 different languages. Today’s announcement marks the completion of SkillSoft’s most significant localization initiative and builds upon its ongoing efforts to offer global organizations the learning assets needed to meet business demands. The new one-hour online courses, which span SkillSoft’s most popular professional development titles, are available in a variety of languages including Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Hindi, Indian English, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Polish, Russian, Spanish and Turkish.

SkillSoft translates courseware into a wide range of languages, currently offering over2000 localized business courses. With the completion of this recent initiative, SkillSoft has expanded its learning portfolio to provide global organizations access to a series of new, shorter-length business skills courses that enable users to quickly garner essential on-the-job skills. The targeted one-hour business courses are an effective tool to improve employee performance and to enhance overall business productivity.

“Learning is an integral part of global business today, as it enables organizations to respond to changes more effectively and retain their competitive advantage,” said Lee Ritze, SkillSoft senior vice president of marketing. “By extending our localized courseware options for global organizations, we’re giving them the tools they need to reach a broader audience and keep pace in the global economy.”

SkillSoft began offering one-hour business skills courseware in 2009 in response to their customers’ request for shorter, subject-specific and more engaging training content. Since then, the one-hour course model has been applied to many titles in the business skills collection, providing users more targeted subject matter in less time. Courses localized in the one-hour format were selected based on results from SkillSoft’s annual content survey, in which clients asked SkillSoft to produce new content for some of its most popular business skills subjects, including: leadership, interpersonal communication, customer service, coaching and managing change.

SkillSoft’s localized courses go beyond straight translation, as the company works with several partners to effectively adapt content so that it is contextually relevant in each international market. While overall learning objectives remain consistent, elements of the courses differ to account for cultural nuances and business style. SkillSoft’s next project includes localized versions of Office 2010 learning content.

One-hour business skills courses are available through SkillPort, SkillSoft’s learning management system, which provides organizations the ability to deploy e-learning solutions globally, offering support for SkillSoft's full library of localized courseware. Alternatively, these courses can be easily integrated into other learning platforms via SkillSoft’s Open Learning Services Architecture (OLSA), or installed directly into customers’ own learning management systems, giving customers the flexibility to choose the deployment option that best meets their needs.

Research Reinforces e-Learning Superiority

Auralog, the pioneer of integrating advanced speech recognition technology with language learning, and the publisher of the TELL ME MORE® language learning software program finds e-Learning to be more effective than traditional instructor-led learning.

A recent 93-page report on online education, conducted by SRI International for the Department of Education, had a most intriguing conclusion: “On average, students in online learning conditions performed better than those receiving face-to-face instruction.”

“The study’s major significance lies in demonstrating that online learning today is not just better than nothing — it actually tends to be better than conventional instruction,” said Barbara Means, the study’s lead author and an educational psychologist at SRI International.

In April of this year the US Department of Education released a study in which they reported results of a meta-analysis of more than 1000 empirical studies comparing online and face-to-face instruction. The study suggests that online students perform significantly better than their classroom counterparts on outcomes of learning measured in the studies.

Additionally, the 2008 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) included demographic items that allowed for the comparison of classroom and online students in terms of engagement. On several of the indicators of engagement online students reported significantly better results. On no indicators did classroom students do so. Relative to classroom students the 2008 NSSE found that online students were significantly more likely to report they:

§ Very often participate in course activities that challenged them intellectually.
§ Very often participate in discussions that enhanced their understanding of different cultures
§ Very often discuss topics of importance to their major.

Interestingly, TELL ME MORE contracted Panel on the Web (POTW), one of Europe’s largest market research and consulting firms, to conduct a research study on e-learning perceptions and effectiveness. Interestingly, 89% of respondents felt that language learning delivered via e-learning was either Effective or Very Effective. Similarly, respondents learning another language online were significantly more satisfied with the overall program experience compared those learning via traditional instructor-led learning, and by the end of the study the number of participants interested in e-learning grew over 16% with 36% confirming they would unequivocally select an e-learning program over a classroom-based course for their language learning needs.
